In 1970, the first Earth Day was organized in the United States, amidst a political landscape filled with grassroots organizations fighting for social justice, and a growing societal consciousness about a wide array of political, social, economic, and environmental issues.

Today, Earth Day has grown to become a global event, reaching over 1 billion people in over 190 different countries. Earth Day calls for individuals, businesses, and governments to enact change and create policies on all levels that help protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future.

Similarly to 1970, our current social climate is filled with organizations of all sizes working together to enact positive change. This spirit of transformation and determination is exactly what Earth Day is all about - empowering communities of all sizes to get involved and actively work to help the planet!

In many ways, the stage has been set, just as it was when Earth Day first began, for a massive wave of change and global action in an effort to combat the effects of climate change and return our world to a healthier, more sustainable, state.

Issuu’s Impact

Here at Issuu, we understand just how important it is for larger companies and organizations to make steps towards a more sustainable future.

As a digital publishing company, the nature of our business itself helps improve the environment. Digital publishing saves an immense amount of paper each year, and every piece of paper saved helps repair our world.

Here are some quick calculations to help put this into perspective:

Between March 2020 and March 2021 there were 1,588,139,035 digital publication reads on Issuu.

And over 32 Billion pages were read.

And if a single tree makes about 8,333 sheets of paper...

We estimate that our Issuu publishing community has saved 3,811,686 trees in the past year alone!

Climate Change

Earth Day has mobilized billions of people since its creation in 1970, and has helped make drastic improvements to the environment and living conditions of people all around the world. But this work is not done yet! Climate change is still very real, and part of the effort to combat climate change involves educating yourself about what it is and how it occurs.

There are many amazing resources that can help you learn more about climate change, including the NASA: Global Climate Change website. As listed on this website, there are a variety of indicators that irrefutably demonstrate the earth’s rapid climate change. These factors include:

  • Global temperature rise

  • Warming ocean

  • Shrinking ice sheets

  • Glacial retreat

  • Decreased snow cover

  • Sea level rise

  • Declining Arctic sea ice

  • Extreme events

  • Ocean acidification
